About the Project |
CulturE-ASEF is an information system in the Internet. It aims to support the cultural exchange between Asia and Europe by guiding interested parties to helpful websites. Following the launch of CulturE-ASEF in March 2002, the systematic directories of annotated links will constantly be expanded. Pat Binder and Gerhard Haupt, the editors of Universes in Universe, developed the concept for this project and brought it to the Department for Cultural Exchange of the Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF). A resolution of the foundation's Board of Governors made possible the realization of CulturE-ASEF as a long-term joint project. In accordance with the character of the foundation, the information system focuses on the member countries of the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM). The CulturE-ASEF website is kindly supported by

The ASEF was established in February 1997 by ASEM members, and has its headquarters in Singapore. Its Board of Governors is comprised of one representative from each of the ASEM countries and one from the European Commission. The foundation's mission is to build bridges between the civil societies of Asia and Europe through promoting cultural, intellectual and people-to-people exchanges, and creating a network of institutional linkages and personal ties between the two regions. The ASEF is currently under the leadership of Ambassador Cho Won-il, Executive Director. The Cultural Exchange Sector of ASEF is directed by Mr Jean Anes. Website: http://www.asef.org
On the initiative of Singapore's Prime Minister, Goh Chok Tong, the first Asia-Europe Meeting was held in Bangkok in 1996. The ASEM process which began here has remained to this day an informal forum of equal partners. The core of this process is the meeting of national and government leaders, including the President of the European Commission, which takes place every 2 years, alternately in Asia and Europe. The ASEM process has 3 main pillars: political; economic; and cultural/intellectual. Summits: 1996 Bangkok
The non-commercial information and communication system on the visual arts of Africa, the Americas and Asia/Pacific within the context of international art processes and cultural exchange, has been online since February 1997.
